Work has begun on Phase One of the Church Lane Neighbourhood Regeneration in Bedford Work is beginning on Phase One of the Church Lane Neighbourhood Centre Regeneration. The new Mayor, Dave Hodgson, will be launching the development at 11.30am on Monday 23rd November. The developer, Coplan Estates, was appointment by Bedford Borough Council in August 2006 to explore and deliver a mixed use project for Church Lane. This first £2.5m phase will include a 17,000 sq ft Aldi supermarket together with a new car park – both these elements were high up on the wish list following two earlier public consultation exercises. “This first phase of the development will deliver a high quality supermarket which incorporates excellent design alongside many modern sustainable build features. In addition the new Aldi store will generate between 15-20 much needed local employment opportunities”, explains Trevor Roff, Bedford Borough Council’s Head of Economic Development & Regeneration. Mayor Dave Hodgson said: “I am delighted that the regeneration of the Church Lane shopping area is getting underway. Once completed the development will provide a new and attractive shopping area for the local community.” The new supermarket will include solar panels which will assist in electricity generation on site, plus a high degree of natural lighting and a heat capture system to eliminate heat loss. “We’re delighted to begin work on this development, despite the tough economic conditions,” commented Colin McQueston, Coplan Estates Director. “The success of this project is solely down to an effective public – private sector partnership which overcame all the obstacles.” Professional land advice for the scheme has been provided by Joanna Embling of Cushman & Wakefield London office. The contractors are McLaren Construction Limited.
